German Dieter Besuch, master of the multi-layered curls, walked away with the gold in this category in Norway while Austrian veteran Franz “Schani” Mitterhauser took second.

The missing link this time was Germany’s Willi Chevalier who would have been among the favorites if he had competed. Chevalier couldn’t make it to Anchorage, but he did win the “other” 2009 world championships in Steinau-Gründau, Germany. At 2010’s First Ever Beard Team USA National Beard and Moustache Championships in Oregon, Willi won the freestyle division and was the clear crowd favorite in his black and white checkerboard suit.
