“Styling aids” means wax, hairspray, hair lacquer, styling mousse, hair gel, and the like!

Hair extensions, hair pins, supporting elements and the like are not permitted. The skin beneath the beard may not be colored artificially so as to enhance the appearance of the beard!

The facial hair should appear natural and not overly “styled.” Unnatural or gaudy hair colors are not allowed. Face masks and overly painted faces are not permitted.
Facial hair must be distinct from head hair. The two should not be combined.
Any head covering must be worn so as not to obstruct the view of the facial hair.

In the freestyle categories, drawings have been intentionally omitted. Individual artistry and creativity are encouraged. Every competitor should be capable of styling his beard or moustache by himself, although some assistance with styling is permissible.

The drawings in the remaining categories are illustrative only. Each contestant should wear his beard or moustache in the manner that best enhances his own facial features.

The English translation is only an approximation of the German version. It is provided for the convenience of those without sufficient knowledge of German. Only the German version is official.

It is important to understand that a literal translation does not always carry the same meaning in both languages. An example is the German word “Bart,” in English “beard.” In German “Bart” is the collective term for all kind and shapes of facial hair, including moustaches, sideburns, and so on. So don’t be surprised if Germans refer to a moustache, sideburns, or other facial hair as a “Bart/beard.”
