Wow, England has its own category!

But right now the category belongs to Switzerland, after Tony Wiess managed to take gold in Norway. The judges chose experience over youth in this category, as Beard Team USA youngster and rookie Jeffrey Moustache took silver. Jeffrey Moustache is a member of the Northern Los Angeles Beard and Moustache Club, a local chapter of Beard Team USA. Yes, that’s right. Jeffrey Moustache.

Meanwhile England had to settle for bronze in its own category.

Some are wondering how Wiess pulled it off, given that the category description includes the requirement that the hairs be “extremely long.” Moustache’s moustache was much longer than Wiess’s. Not a single extremely long hair was out of place. Nor could anyone find single thread out of place on his super sharp outfit. Don’t worry, he’ll be back.

The USA is new to the podium in this category. After long German domination (podium sweeps in 2003 and 2001), England finally stuck gold in 2005 in its own category when the Handlebar Club’s Steve Parsons, dressed as an oh-so-English cricket player, bat in hand, took top honors here. After countless disappointments in rooting for Eddie the Eagle, Tim Henman, and the like, England finally had a hero to be proud of. He’ll be back.

The jolly-olde country’s jolly was short-lived however. Germany’s stranglehold over England in this category is once again firmly established, with top honors in 2007 going to George Lutz and in 2009 to Lutz Giese, President of the Berlin Beard Club. Giese switched categories in Norway and won Fu Manchu.
